Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Prep the Coconut Fiber Liner
Start by cutting down the coconut fiber planter liner to your desired size using scissors. This will determine the final dimensions of your concrete bowl.
2. Create the Base Form
Blow up a balloon and place it in an old box to keep it stable. Open up the trimmed coconut fiber liner and position it over the top of the balloon, shaping it into a bowl-like form.
3. Apply the Concrete Patch
Put on your nitrile gloves (trust me, these are a lifesaver!) and use a palette knife to apply a thick, even layer of concrete patch over the outside of the coconut liner.
Mist the surface lightly with a spray bottle and smooth the concrete using a damp texture sponge. This helps create an even finish while keeping the concrete workable.
4. Add Texture
(Optional) Use a texture roller to add a design to the exterior of the bowl. Rinse the roller with water frequently to prevent the concrete from sticking. Once you’re happy with the texture, let the bowl dry overnight.
5. Finish the Inside
Carefully deflate the balloon and repeat the concrete process on the inside of the bowl. Smooth the surface with a damp sponge, but skip the texture roller for a cleaner, polished interior. Allow it to dry overnight.
6. Paint and Wax
Once the concrete is completely dry, it’s time to add color. Use a foam brush to apply coal black milk paint to the entire bowl. After the paint dries, apply brown wax with a chip brush, focusing on areas where you want to enhance texture and depth.
I recommend Homestead House Milk Paint for projects like this. With over 50% of its ingredients derived from limestone, it offers a dead-flat sheen, a smooth chalky texture, and natural resistance to mold and mildew. Plus, no sealer is required!
