Transform your walls with this quick and easy technique for a soft, timeless finish!
Paint Color: Midnight Blue
If you’ve been dreaming of that perfectly imperfect limewash finish—soft, chalky, and full of old-world charm—look no further! I recently painted one of our guest rooms using Homestead House Milk Paint, and the results blew me away. I’ve done several rooms with this method.
Why Milk Paint?
What makes this paint so special? Over 50% of its ingredients are derived from limestone, making it not only stunning but also practical. Here’s why it’s a dream for your home:
• Dead-flat sheen: Say goodbye to glossy distractions and hello to soft elegance.
• Smooth, chalky texture: Perfect for creating that effortlessly aged, natural look.
• Resistant to mold and mildew: Great for high-humidity areas.
And the best part? This paint is ridiculously easy to use. It adheres seamlessly to:
• Plain drywall
• Drywall compound
• Low-sheen modern paints
No special primer needed—unless you’re working with high-gloss surfaces. In that case, a quick primer application sets the stage beautifully.
My Process: The Perfect Limewash Finish
I wanted a layered, timeless effect, so I used two shades:
• Chocolate
• Coal Black
Here’s the exact process I followed:
1. Brush Choice: I used the STAALMEESTER Original Series Wall Brush (Q)—it’s fantastic for achieving a smooth, artistic look.
2. Step 1: Cross-Hatching: I started with Coal Black, applying it in a cross-hatching technique. This creates depth and visual texture that’s key to a limewashed look.
3. Step 2: Layering: Once the Coal Black dried, I applied the Chocolate shade over top, blending gently to create that rich, layered finish.
4. Step 3: Blending: To soften any harsh lines, I used a sponge (linked here) to blend the colors seamlessly, creating a beautifully natural effect.
No sealer required! The result is a flawless, dead-flat finish that feels soft to the touch yet incredibly durable.
Effortless Touch-Ups
One of the biggest perks of using milk paint? Touch-ups are a breeze. Simply mix a few tablespoons of the paint, and you can seamlessly blend it into your existing finish. No patchy spots, no frustration.
