Sometimes the most beautiful transformations come from thinking outside the box—or in this case, cutting one in half.
This charming makeover began as a handmade pine plywood desk, full of potential but lacking in style. With a little vision (and some help from my husband Richard), I reimagined it into a stunning set of nightstands perfect for modern, moody interiors.

The Transformation Process
1. Cut and Shape
I started by cutting the desk in half to create two separate bases. Richard stepped in to route the top edges, softening the profile and adding a more refined look to the newly formed nightstands.
2. Cleaning & Sanding Down the Past
The original finish had to go, so I cleaned and sanded thoroughly using graduating grits, stopping at 180 grit since I planned to stain the wood. Pine plywood can be tricky, but proper prep makes all the difference.
3. A Deep, Moody Finish
I applied a water-based stain to enhance the wood grain. Color: Special Walnut
Once dry, I followed with a paint wash using a 3:1 ratio of water to Fusion Mineral Paint in the color Cast Iron—a deep, rich black that gave the perfect moody vibe.

4. Protection and Depth
To seal the look, I applied two coats of Satin Polyvine Wax Finish Varnish—one of my favorite low-luster topcoats that adds subtle sheen and durability.
Once dry, I added Dark Walnut Wax, buffing it off after 5 minutes to deepen the tone and enhance the texture.
5. Hardware and Finishing Touches
The old hardware holes were filled with wood plugs. Though mostly hidden, I added vintage backplates and antique brass hardware to disguise any remnants and elevate the look. Inside, I lined the drawers with a black floral peel-and-stick wallpaper—a subtle surprise that completes the transformation.
